Lower parking charge recommended for Christchurch

Following surveys by Christchurch Council and Christchurch Chamber of Trade & Commerce, councillors on the council’s Resources Committee will decide on Wednesday 20 November whether to take forward the introduction of a £1 for two hours parking charge in the town centre.

The recommendation published on the committee agenda is to introduce the new charge – a reduction of 60p on the current rate – at Saxon Square, Bank Close, Wick Lane and Bypass (Waitrose) car parks from April 2014. As this would reduce car park revenue by approximately £22,000 per year, there are further recommendations to raise the three-hour rate in these car parks by 10p to £2.50, the four-hour rate by 20p to £3.40 and the half hour rate – only applicable at Saxon Square – by 10p to 50p.

The Resources Committee will also be asked to approve free parking after 10am in town centre car parks in the run-up to Christmas from Tuesday 17 December to Christmas Eve in order to encourage shoppers to buy their Christmas gifts from Christchurch retailers.

The Committee meets at 6pm on 20 November.
